Please follow these instructions carefully prior to the sedation appointment.
E-mail Dr. Grace Yeh
- Your child should have a good dinner the evening before the appointment, and may also have a snack before bedtime.
- Your child may have no solid food or milk eight hours prior to the appointment.
- Your child may have clear liquids (water, apple juice, sports drinks; i.e. Gatorade, and jello) up until two hours prior to the appointment.
- Your child should take his/her normal medication unless told otherwise.
- If your child develops a runny nose, cough, or cold, the appointment may have to be postponed. Please call your dentist immediately.
- Dress your child in a short-sleeved shirt and nonconstrictive clothing. Small children should have a diaper or training pants on. Bring a change of clothes just to be on the safe side.
- Bring a light blanket to cover your child while under anesthesia.
Post-Sedation Instructions
- Your child had just completed a sedation dental treatment. The after affects of the medications may last for several hours. You can expect your child to be drowsy or unsteady for a time after waking up, occasionally up to several hours. Remain close to your child to comfort him/her. Please do not allow your child to stand or walk without your help or support during the recovery process. Your child may have a slightly elevated temperature today and it is not unusual for a child to become nauseated or even vomit after sedation
- When you return home allow your child to rest, lying on his/her side. Do not plan activities. Have your child play indoors, under supervision, for the remainder of the day. If your child feels warm you may sponge him/her off with lukewarm water. Encourage your child to drink fluids (water, diluted juices). Your child needs to be encouraged to eat. Start with foods easy to digest (clear fluids, clear soups, noodles, etc.) Do not give your child any medications except for those that have been recommended or prescribed by the doctor.
Contact the Anesthesia Provider if your Child has:
- difficulty breathing or has a harsh, squeaky sound when inhaling.
- a temperature over 100 degrees that is increasing.
- persistent or severe vomiting.
- persistent bleeding.
- not passed urine by his/her bedtime.
